Do not buy an '06, and check on the engine number of an '07 before you buy it. Remember that the V6s in all 2006 and early 2007 C, CLK and E Classes are affected by the soft sintered sprocket on the balance shaft. It cost me $240 parts & labor with the same tech as before. I had one small sensor issue with the '07 C230 I drive now. Apart from that, I had no other issues with it. Still took him over a week to find the issue and get it fixed. Ended up costing me about $800 with an excellent Mercedes tech I've always used. I had an '01 C230 Komp and I did have a big electrical issue. I wouldn't say it's the worst thing you could spend your money on (certainly bigger money holes in old Jags), but as others have said, watch out for the electronics. My last point would be to get a pre purchase inspection at a dealer or reputable german mechanic which will give you a very good indicator of what shape whatever car you're looking at is in. I'd stay away from the 2.3 four cylinders as they had issues with timing chains stretching and screwing up the engine, but again if you're comfortable doing your own work, its only a timing chain and not that hard to replace. As for the drivetrain, the 2.4 or 3.2 v6 engines are your best bet, the drivetrain in those is essentially bulletproof if maintained with regular oil/transmission fluid changes and other basic maintenance items. If you are, then I'd say go for it, I have had to tear in to the dash board a couple times to replace some things that broke (plastic collar that links steering column to height adjustment motor, and a new radio to replace the broken one, as well as a lateral acceleration sensor) but it really was not all that hard at all.
